Nepal is a land of rare scenic splendor unrivaled in the Himalayas. Bordering the Tibetan Plateau, her territory stretches 885 kilometers East to West, the world’s highest peaks including Mt. Everest marking her northern most limits, cascading sharply downwards in a short from 145 - 214 kilometers span through rugged mountains, cultural diversity, conifer, temperate and tropical forests, terraces of paddy, millet and corn to the low-lying foothills, birth place of Lord Buddha that form the Southern borders where they join with the plains of India.

Area : 147,181 square Kilometers.

Capital : Kathmandu.

Geography : Situated between Tibetan Autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China in the north and India in the south. The length of the Kingdom is 885 km east-west and its breath varies from 145-241 km north-south. The country can be divided in to three geographical regions.

Himalayan Region : This region occupies about 15% of the total land area. The altitude of the region ranges bwteen 4,877m - 8848 m. It includes eight of the 14 highest summits in the world which exceed an altitude of 8,000 m including Everest, Kanchanjunga, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and others.

Mountain Region : This region accounts for about 68% of the total land area. It is formed by the Mahabharat range that soars up to 4,877m and the lower Churiya.

Terai Region : The low-land Terai occupies about 17% of the total land area of the country.

Terrain : Heavily mountains. 14% of the land is cultivated. 13% is pasture, 32% is forested.

Population : About 23 million.

People :
More than 61 ethnic groups and 70 spoken language, among them Gurung, Magar, Tamang, Rai, Limbu, Newar, Sherpa, Tharu and Indo-Aryan cast groups of Brahman and Chhetri.

Language :
Nepali is the official language, widely spoken. Newari 3 %, Tibeto-Burman language 19 %, Indic language 20 %. In all more than 30 languages and numerous dialects spoken.

Religion:
Officially, Hindu 90 %, Buddhist 8%, Islam 2%. Many of Hindus and Buddhists follow common gods and goddess, celebrate common festivals.

Government :
Multi-party democracy with Constitutional Monarchy, under His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev; with Prime Minister heading a Nepali Congress cabinet.

Currency :
Nepalese currency (about 75.00 equal US$ 1.00)

History :
Nepal has been always an independent and sovereign country with glorious history, culture and tradition that date back to time immemorial. Before the campaign of national integration was launched by King Pritivhi Narayan Shah, the Great, the Kathmandu Valley was ruled by the Malla Kings, whose contributions to art and culture are indeed great and unique. In 1768 AD, the Shah dynasty ascended the throne of the unified Kingdom. His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev is the eleventh King in the Shah dynasty.

Nepal-occupying only 0.1% of the earth- is home to: · 2% of all the flowering plants in the world; · 8% of the world’s population of birds (more than 848 species); · 4% of mammals on earth; · 11 of the world’s 14 families of butterflies (more than 500 species); · 600 indigenous plant families; · 319 species of exotic orchids. It includes eight of the 14 highest summits in the world which exceed an altitude of 8,000m including Everest, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and others.

Everest Region
The Everest region boasts of some the world’s highest mountains such as the Everest, Lotse, Nuptse and beautiful mount Ama Dablam. It is also the home of the Sherpa people whose warm hospitality and skills as mountain guides and porters have made them famous. Its active and devout monasteries are the center of the Buddhist Lama culture and its festivals are many and colorful. In this region you will be into the heart of these giant massifs passing through colorful and beautiful Sherpas villages that each have something unique to offer such as the Yeti’s skull and hands at Pangboche or the world’s highest Monasteries at Tenboche. And of course at every village you will be extended typical Sherpa hospitality. In this region, most of the treks commence with flight to Lukla (2800m.) which is a small (15000 feet runway length) STOL (short takeoff and landing) airstrip. Annapurna Region

Most treks in this region commence from Pokhara valley, which lies 200 km from Kathmandu, the capital city, in the shadow of the lovely Annapurna Mountains. Annapurna circuit trek begins at the middle-hills villages of Besi Sahar on the Marshyangdi River and follows the river all the way from Brahmin-Chettri-Gurung settlement to that of the Tibetan Buddhistic regions of Manang. The high point is the crossing of the Throng-La at 5416 m into the Kali Gandaki Valley stopping at the famous shrine of Muktinath then continuing along the river to Tatopani through Thakali settlements, Magar and Gurung villages back into Pokhara. Or beginning in the tropical climate of Pokhara’s bare 900m and gradually ascending to the 5400m pass above Muktinath, and may be on to upper Mustang which was opened in October 1991 to a limited number of tourists.

The main trails in the region and trek days from Pokhara are: easy hiking around Pokhara 1 to 6 days, Ghorepani circuit 6-day, Muktinath via Jomsom and flight back 8 to 12 day, Annapurna Sanctuary 11-day which although is considered moderate the most beautiful trek in the world, Annapurna Circuit 5416, 19-day, Annapurna-Dhaulagiri trek 4200m. a newly discovered route 13-Day, Siklish 2200m. 7-day, Lamjung 3800m. 7-day, Gorkha 2800m. 8-day from Kathmandu, Dhaulagiri Circuit 19 day, Manaslu Circuit trek 5100m, 21-day, Legendary Mustang 3840m, 13-day, Pokhara to Dolpa trek 19-day, peak climbs enroute and several other endless trails.

Central Region
 
This region covers treks in the Kathmandu Valley, Langtang, Gosaikunda, Ganesh Himal and Helambu which are the most beautiful region of the kingdom. Its ranges, the Langtang-Lirung, are spectacular while its forests of fir and rhododendron delightful. The treks are an incursion from the Kathmandu Valley’s heavy Hindu dominance to the Buddhistic culture of the north, the land is dotted with stupas, mani walls, chortens and monasteries and the flutter of prayer flags.

The trek days and routes are from very easy-Kathmandu Valley treks day walk to 5-day, moderate Helambu 3490m 7-day, and difficult treks from Syabru through Gosaikunda into Helambu 4600m, Ganesh Himal 7-day, Ganesh Himal to Gorkha 13 Days and easy and couple of days treks on the rim of the Valley.

Far Western Region
 
The far western region of Nepal is still unspoiled and untouched by foreigners . Time has stood still for centuries where the inhabitants, of Tibetan descent, continue to live as they did long ago. The Phoksindo National Park covers an area of 3555 sq. Km. Full of virgin forests harboring one of the world’s best habitat of snow-leopard, blue sheep, ghoral, musk deer, wolf and other wildlife. One of the prime spots for herb hunting place is the rigged valley of Jumla (2,370m) in far western Nepal known as “Wild West’ because of its remoteness and the difficulty of life on its arid, forested ridges. Most of the treks in the region commence from here and the fastest way to reach Jumla (short take off and landing airstrip) is by flight from Nepalgunj. Tourists are rare and any trip is certain to be an adventure. There is mixed culture and religion of Hinduism, and further up at upper Dolpa, immigrant Tibetan families live. It is known as the hidden valley of the crystal mountain. Rara Lake which is known as Queen of Lakes is the most beautiful region of far west Nepal, scenic and covering different cultural influence. This area is named after pristine Lake Rara, which is the biggest lake in Nepal. Upper Dolpo was opened for a limited number of tourists in 1991.

Lower Dolpo 5115m. 20-day and Upper Dolpo 5400m. 20-day to 40 days, both involving a visit to the mythical Phoksundo lake, Rara trek 3600m. 12-day and Lower Dolpo through Pokhara 19-day are the main trails of the region. A trek to Mt. Kailash via Simikot into Tibet also can be done from here.
